Lord of the Flies Short Film

Role: Background Illustrator and Animator

This stop motion short film is an interpretation of Lord of the Flies based on Carl Jungian themes of the song “The Rhythm of the Heat (by Peter Gabriel).” Meant to capture a primal story using paper puppets and monotone illustrations, all the parts were composited to emphasize the shadows and darkness of Carl Jung’s psychology.

Working under Josie Glassman’s Direction, I illustrated backgrounds within a larger project pipeline. This was my first time designing under direction. Working with a set visual and required brush sets, I learned a lot about how to adapt my style into another using the tools I was given. Based on the storyboard reference shot I was shown, I had freedom with how I made all the elements, and it was easy to set up the composition wanted by the director.

I kept all my files neat and named, and ended up animating all the same shots I had worked on previously. Illustrations and animations each had their round of critique and updates before passing it off to the compositing team. What I loved about this process is that I could really focus on the parts I loved most without responsibility for the entire project. It was an honor working under Josie who gave me creative freedom, encouragement and great feedback. I was guided through how my shows would effect the story or compositing, so it was easy to make any necessary changes to final.

Process and Pipeline

These are a few of the storyboards I was given to reference my backgrounds on. Some were abstract, some were clear, and some had freedom to develop further. Storyboard done by Josie Glassman and Cora Keene.
