I am King Today!

Role: Designer

Illustrated design board for the Open Table app’s promotional campaign aims to positively promote the benefits of their application. The app itself allows users to reserve tables before arriving, ensuring no wait time and guaranteed service. The concept of this project aimed to capture the feeling of royalty that comes with immediate service and the euphoric feeling of the first bite, the defeat of “hanger.” The main character goes through a dreamy journey where he ascends to heaven and becomes a king.

Creative Process

To focus on the service, I came up keywords that were directly related then branched into my personal association with that word. I got stuck on the problem that the app addresses, which is waiting to eat. I am someone who gets hit with hunger suddenly, so the keyword “hanger” was important. I felt that this piece need to capture the feeling of euphoria and excitement to be a persuasive ad, and a transition was needed to show the contrast between moods. I sketched as the project brief were being explained, and ended up personifying hanger into a king character.

Class Goals & Project Brief

This project was made in MOME 333 at SCAD, Design For Motion. Creating a set of designs that kept motion, transition, and story in mind was my goal. It aided me in creating a solution to the project brief by focusing on how the motion would exist in a short moment, and to keep it aligned with the positive campaign. Even though the ideation started from hanger, the focus is driven on how one can be transformed in a positive and light way.
